The Ogun State Government has distributed manual and electronic wheelchairs to learners with mobility challenges across the state as part of activities marking the 2026 International Wheelchairs Day celebration.
The distribution, held at Daniel Akintonde Model School for Children with Special Needs in Abeokuta, underscored the Prince Dapo Abiodun administration’s commitment to inclusive education and support for persons living with disabilities.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, disclosed that beneficiaries were drawn from the five special needs schools in the state, as well as public primary and secondary schools.
Arigbabu recalled that since the inception of the present administration, wheelchairs and white canes had been distributed annually to learners with physical and visual impairments, noting that more than 500 mobility aids had so far been provided.
According to him, the intervention was aimed at creating a more conducive teaching and learning environment for children with special needs while ensuring that they enjoy equal opportunities to realise their aspirations.
He stated that Governor Dapo Abiodun remained committed to improving the welfare of persons living with disabilities through programmes and initiatives designed to give them a stronger sense of belonging in society.
“If someone is brilliant and has lofty aspirations, but is hindered by one physical challenge or another, achieving such dreams may become difficult. That is why the Governor has continued to do everything possible to make life easier for them,” he said.
The commissioner also commended the Olowu of Owu, Oba Saka Matemilola, for renovating and equipping the school’s hall and hostels with modern facilities and gadgets.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko, said every child deserved the opportunity to move freely, learn comfortably and pursue a brighter future with confidence.
She described Governor Abiodun as a leader whose passion for inclusive education had continued to inspire impactful interventions for children with special needs.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Principal of the school, Mrs. Deborah Ogundimu, said the programme was organised to celebrate resilience, courage, inclusion and the rights of children living with mobility challenges.
Two parents of beneficiaries, Mrs. Ime Unwana and Mrs. Folasade Abiodun, expressed appreciation to the state government for the gesture, describing the administration’s policies and programmes as inclusive and beneficial to all residents.
