The Yewa North Local Government has unveiled plans to distribute 30,000 climate-resilient cash crop seedlings to farmers, in a strategic move to enhance agricultural productivity and improve livelihoods across the council area.
Th chairman of the council, Olusola Akinbode, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in his office in Ayetoro, noting that the initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen food security and promote sustainable agriculture.
Akinbode explained that the selected seedlings were carefully chosen for their resilience to changing weather conditions and their ability to mature within three years, ensuring quicker returns on investment for farmers.
He added that distribution is scheduled for mid-April to coincide with the onset of full rainfall, thereby maximising growth and yield.
“We are committed to empowering our farmers with improved seedlings that are not only high-yielding but also adaptable to our environment. These crops are designed to mature faster, ensuring that farmers begin to reap the benefits of their labour within a short period,” he said.
The chairman further revealed that the council had commenced the nurturing of the seedlings to guarantee quality and sustainability, stressing that the initiative also includes capacity-building programmes for farmers.
“Our focus is not just on increasing production but also on ensuring quality and global competitiveness. Farmers will be trained on best practices and the proper application of inputs in line with international export standards,” he added.
Akinbode noted that the initiative builds on previous interventions, recalling that about 11,000 seedlings were distributed to farmers in the past year.
He also aligned the programme with the agricultural development drive of the Ogun State Government under the leadership of Dapo Abiodun, particularly the ISEYA agenda, which prioritises economic growth through agriculture and sustainable development.
