Promising young boxer Jamiu Adeniji has emerged as the Best Boxer of the Tournament at the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame (LBHF) Ibile Divisional Championships held at the Ikorodu Town Hall over the weekend.
The one-day championship, organised in partnership with the Lagos Amateur Boxing Association, featured 10 exciting bouts and continued the LBHF’s longstanding commitment to developing grassroots boxing talent across Lagos State.
Adeniji, who represented Agboyi Ketu LCDA, defeated Wahab Adiat of Ikorodu West LCDA in the men’s 50kg category, delivering a dominant performance that quickly became one of the highlights of the competition.
From the opening bell, Adeniji imposed his authority on the contest with sharp jabs, well-timed uppercuts and effective combinations that kept his opponent under sustained pressure. His impressive display earned him a 5–0 unanimous decision from the judges.
His commanding performance also earned him the tournament’s top individual honour, as he was named Boxer of the Tournament to the delight of boxing fans at the venue.
Speaking after his victory, Adeniji described the award as a product of hard work, while expressing his determination to break into the national team and represent Nigeria on the international stage.
“I am so excited to be named the best boxer. I know I can do more, and I hope that with this kind of performance, I can work my way into the national team and represent Nigeria at international tournaments. I must also commend the organisers for putting this competition together. I hope to maintain my good form and perform even better at the end-of-year tournament,” he said.
The LBHF project, founded in July 2009, has grown into a major grassroots boxing development platform in Lagos, with its activities sustained through the vision and support of former Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.
Director of the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame, David Mohammed, commended the impressive turnout at Ikorodu, saying the growing support for the Ibile format demonstrated the increasing popularity of the championships across Lagos.
“We are happy that the Ibile format is pulling crowds and attracting interest across the five divisional areas of Lagos. We expect the grand finale later in the year to be even more competitive and glamorous. We have seen quality performances, and we believe more of these boxers will fight their way into the national teams in the near future,” Mohammed said.
The championship attracted boxers from Ikorodu Local Council, Ikorodu North LCDA, Ikorodu West LCDA, Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA, Ijede LCDA, Agboyi Ketu, Ikosi Isheri and Imota LCDA, with two bouts ending in draws.
The women’s category also produced notable performances, with Aishat Yisa of Ikorodu North LCDA defeating her teammate, Abisola Agbolade, 4–1 in the 50kg category. In the 54kg category, Oyindamola Kuseju of Ikorodu LGA defeated Basirat Kelani of Ijede LCDA by the same 4–1 scoreline.
Other results saw Kolade Ojo of Ikorodu North LCDA beat Akinola Akingbade of Agboyi Ketu 5–0 in the 55kg category, while Shazilly Hamzat of Ikorodu West LCDA edged Waris Sanusi of Ikosi Isheri LCDA 3–2 in the 60kg category.
In the 65kg category, Kingsley Gabriel of Ikorodu North LCDAsecured a 3–2 victory over Folagbade Ademola of Ikosi Isheri LCDA, further underlining the quality and competitiveness of the grassroots championship.
With the performances witnessed in Ikorodu, attention now turns to the LBHF end-of-year grand finale, where the emerging talents are expected to compete for further honours and opportunities to advance their boxing careers.
