The Ogun State Police Command has corrected rumours surrounding a popular TikTok video claiming a severe sexual assault in Ogun, stressing that the victim was not arrested when she initially came forward.
The uproar began on Sunday, when TikTok user Mirabel (@mirab351) posted a frightening video saying she had been sexually attacked in her flat.
In the video, which soon went popular on social networking platforms such as X (previously Twitter), she claims that a stranger broke into her home while she was unconscious, physically abused her, and raped her.
She further alleged that the attacker sent her threatening texts and that she attempted suicide as a result of the stress.
The video elicited global outrage, sympathy, and calls for justice. Initial reports located the incident in Lagos, leading the Lagos State Police and other agencies to respond.
However, preliminary investigations found that the alleged incident occurred in Ogijo, Ogun State, which shifted accountability to the Ogun State Police Command.
Following the popular tweet, several social media users claimed Mirabel had been detained, implying she may have made up the event due to perceived contradictions in her testimony.
The police responded immediately to these rumours.
In a post on X on Thursday, Ogun State Police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi stated that Mirabel reportedly presented herself voluntarily at the Ibafo Police Division on Wednesday, February 18, to submit an official case.
After a preliminary review, she was sent to Ogijo Division, the proper jurisdiction, where it was determined she was not in a stable enough position to provide additional information.
According to the statement, "She was immediately taken for a comprehensive medical check-up, and her health is being closely monitored because her well-being is paramount." At no point was the victim apprehended."
The police stressed that the situation is being handled professionally and advised the public to rely on verifiable information.
