The All Progressives Congress in Ogun State on Wednesday held calm ward congresses in all 20 local government areas, with party members commended for their orderly conduct and dedication to internal democracy.
The drill came after the National Working Committee and APC governors approved the convention itinerary, which outlined a sequence of activities running up to the party's national convention next month.
Speaking after the congress at Ward 3, Iperu, Ikenne Local Government Area, Governor Dapo Abiodun lauded the serene mood that pervaded the exercise throughout the state, characterising it as a sign of the party's unity and maturity.
He also praised the immediate past ward executives for their leadership and accomplishments, stating that their managerial abilities have strengthened the party at the grassroots level.
Abiodun accepted that not all members could become party executives and asked for understanding and collaboration, promising party members that their well-being would continue to be prioritised.
"Except for the All Progressives Congress, there is no other party; every other party is a counterfeit. The APC remains the only party, not just in Nigeria, but also throughout Africa," the governor stated.
He also thanked ward members for their support during the recent House of Representatives by-election and e-registration drive, and urged them to continue to back the party and his administration in order to ensure the delivery of democratic dividends.
After the congress, which was held at the ward secretariat in Iperu's Iregun neighbourhood, Alhaji Sanni Razaq was elected Ward Chairman, Yinka Balogun was named Secretary, and Morouf Okugboye was named Vice Chairman.
Similarly, at Ward 3 in Sango-Ota, Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele praised the congress as calm and essential for the emergence of competent grassroots leaders.
She praised party supporters for their discipline and orderly conduct, saying that the peaceful outcome across the state indicated that the APC is still the party to beat in Ogun State.
According to her, no political party can exist without a strong grassroots organization, and she emphasised that the successful and peaceful congresses had strengthened the party's chances for future electoral success.
