The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker has praised the United Nations Children's Fund for collaborating with the state government to boost emergency response and adequate access to healthcare services in riverine and hard-to-reach areas around the state. Coker revealed this on Thursday in Makun-Omi, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, while launching a boat ambulance donated to the state by UNICEF.
The commissioner stated that the intervention was part of Governor Dapo Abiodun's efforts to improve primary healthcare services and ensure that citizens in distant locations receive timely medical care. Coker stated, "The difficult terrain and water transportation challenges have continued to impede access to healthcare in riverine communities."

In his welcome remark, the Chairman of the Local Government, Adetoye Odunoiki, represented by one of his aides, Olabode Ogunlana, praised the state government for the effort, calling it as timely and beneficial to people. Ogunlana expressed that the commissioning of the ambulance boat was a significant milestone for the local government, demonstrating the administration's and development partners' shared commitment to saving lives and increasing people's overall well-being. He also noted that the donation would considerably improve travel for pregnant women and other inhabitants in riverine and coastal regions, ensuring better access to timely and high-quality healthcare services.
The council leader stated that the intervention would shorten emergency response times and improve healthcare delivery in hard-to-reach areas of the local government.
Mrs Florence Molokwu, Vaccine Supply and Logistics Consultant for UNICEF, praised the present administration's progress toward a healthier environment on behalf of the development partners. Mrs Molokwu stated that UNICEF would continue to promote excellent health services for children and women in order to reduce mortality, while also encouraging the local government and community to keep the ambulance boat operational, underlining its critical role in facilitating immunisation services and outreach programmes.
Mrs Aderonke Adekunmisi, speaking on behalf of the host communities, thanked the state government for the generosity, noting that the ambulance boat will considerably improve emergency response and healthcare access in the area. She also stated that the intervention will benefit pregnant women, children, and the elderly, and urged community members to support the facility's proper use and maintenance.
