Residents of Akinbo Street and the Mefun area in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area are set to heave a sigh of relief as the council has unveiled plans to tackle the long-standing flooding challenge in the community.
The Executive Chairman, Hon. Lawal Wasiu, disclosed that the Works and Housing Department has been directed to commence the construction of a properly channelled drainage system, complete with culverts, to address the persistent problem.
He explained that the project, which will stretch from Akinbo Street to Mefun Road, is designed to provide a lasting solution to the recurring flooding, particularly during the rainy season, which has over the years disrupted livelihoods, damaged properties, and hindered movement within the area.
According to the chairman, the initiative underscores his administration’s commitment to addressing critical environmental and infrastructural challenges, while improving the overall quality of life of residents.
Wasiu further noted that the project was conceived following repeated complaints from residents on the adverse effects of flooding on homes, businesses, and road accessibility.
He added that the council has actively engaged the community through its Water and Environmental Sanitation Department, as well as the Information, Education and Sports Department, to ensure residents are well-informed and cooperative throughout the construction period.
Reacting to the development, a community representative, Mr. Toriola Adekambi, commended the council for responding to the plight of the people and prioritising infrastructure development in the area.
He expressed optimism that the intervention would bring lasting relief and put an end to years of hardship caused by flooding.
