The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening entrepreneurship and agricultural education across schools, as part of efforts to equip students with practical skills for self-reliance after graduation.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abayomi Arigbabu, disclosed this in Abeokuta while receiving members of the Steering Committee on Student Entrepreneurship Activities Hub (SEA Hub) during a courtesy visit to his office at Oke-Mosan.
Arigbabu explained that the government would continue to provide the necessary support to schools to enhance hands-on learning in agriculture and other vocational fields. According to him, the initiative is aimed at preparing students to become self-sufficient and productive members of society.
He recalled that the Ministry’s 2024 directive making agriculture and woodwork compulsory subjects was part of deliberate measures to promote skills acquisition among learners.
The Commissioner further noted that foundational vocational knowledge had been embedded in the Junior Secondary School curriculum, including lessons in measurement, estimation and basic calculations, to support students’ future career paths.
“We will continue to provide orientation, support and monitoring to ensure that our learners and schools fully benefit from the policy on entrepreneurship development,” he said.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Oluwatosin Oloko, commended the state government for revitalising vocational studies, expressing optimism that Ogun would excel in entrepreneurship competitions with sustained support.
Earlier, the SEA Hub Team Lead in Ogun State, Micheal Adesanya, lauded the administration’s strides in the education sector. He appealed for the introduction of a dedicated weekly entrepreneurship period in schools, noting that such a move would help Ogun regain its leadership position in entrepreneurship development, recently overtaken by neighbouring Lagos State.
